Someone who grew up being abandoned may unconsciously choose unavailable people, withdraw before intimacy becomes secure, or provoke rejection so that the ending arrives on terms they recognize. Someone repeatedly told they were worthless may sabotage opportunities because success creates a terrifying contradiction: What if the old story about me was wrong? What am I without it? Familiar suffering can feel safer than unfamiliar possibility.
